Technological and AI breakthroughs occur almost daily. One of the most exciting recent developments came from China, where Huawei unveiled a triple-folding smartphone. It’s the first pocket-sized device with this kind of folding system.
Imagine carrying a regular phone that can unfold into the size of a tablet, like an iPad. Pretty smart, right? It’s a practical solution for people who are always on the go and want the full-screen experience of a tablet without the bulk.
The Huawei Mate XT took some serious brainpower to design. To make the triple-fold possible, the company developed a highly intricate hinge system, which has undoubtedly struck fear into the hearts of many smartphone repair shops.
Demonstration videos have popped up everywhere all over social media as well as numerous unboxing videos. They show that the Huawei Mate XT is packaged while in the unfolded position.
Hands-on reviews reveal that the display can handle multiple app windows at once, allowing for custom resizing. Huawei suggested uses for the phone in its unfolded mode include reading books and magazines with double-page spreads or using emails and apps like on a tablet.
Other features of the phone include its array of four cameras including one with a ten-stop variable aperture telephoto lens that allows the user to control how much light enters the camera.
It also comes with a special phone case that not only protects the device when folded but also works as a stand, keeping it upright whether it’s folded or fully opened.
Huawei launched their Mate XT triple foldable device just hours after US giants Apple presented their iPhone 16 lineup. Apple has yet to release a foldable phone despite having a patent for the design since 2016.
There’s been speculation that South Korean tech giant Samsung is working on a groundbreaking rollable screen device, set for a 2025 release.
It seems the company isn’t fully satisfied with its foldable offerings, like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, which are already popular among mainstream consumers.
There is still much that isn’t known about the Huawei Mate XT including the release date for the device in other countries. The Mate XT smartphones will go on sale starting September 20th, but only in China.
