Kenyan-born Huldah Momanyi wins Minnesota seat in US elections

Kenyan-born Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley has won the Minnesota House of Representatives seat in the US elections. She will now represent District 38A in the legislature. She had contested for the seat on a Democratic-Farmer-Labour Party and defeated Republican Brad Olson.

“I’m running to represent the interests of residents of Osseo, southwest Brooklyn Park, and all Minnesotans because I believe that every voice matters, every vote counts, and we are stronger together,” she had stated in a campaign call.

Huldah says that she is the daughter of Philip and Tabitha Momanyi who are first generation Kenyan immigrants in the United States.

“My family and I have called Minnesota and the Brooklyns home for over 20 years. I graduated from Cooper High School and earned three Bachelor degrees and an MBA all from Bethel University,” she says.

“I have built a career in data privacy and data protection, while my true passion has been organizing within the community to meet the needs of all residents. As homeowners in Brooklyn Park, my husband, Bart, and I have the honor of raising our our wonderful children Jaydah Rae and Jordan Philip in this community. I am excited and humbled to have the opportunity to run and be your next Representative for District 38A!”

Huldah stated that her father had immigrated to the United States as a student in the early 1980s. For 11 years, she says, he fought within the country’s challenging immigration system, and at one point faced imminent deportation.

“With only 48 hours remaining, a coalition of churches petitioned Senator Paul Wellstone who stepped in and lobbied on my family’s behalf. At the last moment, the court overturned the deportation order,” she says.

“Senator Wellstone proved himself a man of the people and is the reason my family now calls America home. He inspired me to serve the community by running for office and proved that when good people run, lives are changed for the better.”
