Kisii school rejects KCSE results after 136 students scored D in mathematics

Co-Op post

In this year’s KCSE results released by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, there is still an uneasy atmosphere in the country. Concerns have been raised that marking was not transparent.

Students from Ibacho High School in Masaba South, Kisii County, took to the streets to protest what they believed to be unfair and impossible results, resulting from poor marking. Their parents and teachers joined them in the demonstration.

The students claimed they were very bright and had high hopes of performing well in their KCSE. They noted that the released results do not reflect their capabilities, hence rejecting them.

“We want our results. In the past year, we were very bright students. We expected to achieve excellent results,” they lamented.

Crying out to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), the students requested a remarking of their papers over what they termed ‘impossible’ performance.

They wondered how a student could score a D in all subjects, and why 136 out of 138 students got a D in mathematics. These numbers and grades raised their suspicions.

“I want to ask KNEC how a student can score a D plain in every subject. That is not possible. How is it that 136 students can score a D in mathematics? That is not possible,” said one of the students.

Maintaining the same sentiment, parents expressed their disappointment with the marking of their children’s papers.

“We were really discouraged as parents outside when we heard our students did not perform well,” they stated.
