Process of obtaining an International Driving Permit in Kenya

Process of obtaining an International Driving Permit in Kenya

Ever wondered what it takes to drive on foreign roads? Whether it’s a road trip or driving to a different country, you’ll need to have some documents to be allowed such privileges.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) allows you to legally drive in foreign countries where your local driver’s license isn’t recognized. Summarily, it translates your license into multiple languages for authorities to understand.

Without an IDP, you might face legal issues, insurance problems, rental car restrictions, and travel delays due to non-compliance with local laws and regulations.

The best option is to get an International Driving Permit before travelling. In Kenya, the process is straightforward but requires meeting specific requirements.

Notably, the IDP is not a stand-alone document and must be accompanied by your domestic driver’s license. If you’re in Kenya and need an International Driving Permit, the place to go is the Automobile Association (AA) Kenya, the only issuing authority.

IDP Requirements

  1. Must be above 18 years old if applying for a motor vehicle license. Must be above 16 years old if applying for a motorcycle license.
  2. Must have an original valid Kenyan driving license
  3. Must have two passport-size photos with the applicant’s name written on the back
  4. Should carry a copy of the National ID
  5. Must be a member of the issuing authority before filing for an IDP.

How to apply for an IDP

  1. There are over 60 AA branches in Kenya in different locations. Visit any of them.
  2. Request for an IDP application form and attach all required documents
  3. Pay relevant application fees depending on preference. They are as follows:
    • Valid for 1 year – Sh. 6,000 for members; Sh. 9,000 for non-members
    • Valid for 2 years – Sh. 11,000 for members; Sh. 16,000 for non-members
    • Valid for 3 years – Sh. 15,000 for members; Sh. 24,000 for non-members
  4. After payment verification, submit the application form to the relevant AA office for IDP processing. This takes about 20 minutes.
  5. Once provided with the IDP, verify the details to ensure accuracy before travelling with the vehicle to foreign land.

When travelling, make sure your IDP is valid for your entire trip. If it expires while you’re abroad, renew it as soon as possible.

Some countries have extra requirements, and your IDP and Kenyan driver’s license might not be enough. Double-check all necessary documents for the country you intend to travel to prior to the journey.
