A group of students in Kenya seeking to further their studies are set to benefit from fully paid scholarships to study in various universities abroad.
This is after 19 Italian universities announced fully paid scholarships targeting refugee students living in Kenya.
According to a statement shared by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Kenya on Monday, March 18, successful applicants will receive financial support for plane tickets and visa-related expenses and a study grant to help them during their stay in Italy.
The learners will be selected to begin degree courses in September 2024 and will be exempt from tuition fees at the universities participating in the programme.
Among the Universities where the learners will be posted include The University of Urbino, The University of Eastern Piedmont, the University of Milan, the Polytechnic University of Milan, and the University of Bergamo.

UNHCR noted that the selection process for admission will be carried out by and is the sole responsibility of the individual universities.
“The project University Corridors for Refugees UNICORE 6.0 is promoted by Italian universities with the support of UNHCR, Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Caritas Italiana, Diaconia Valdese, Centro Astalli and other partners. ” UNHCR stated
“It aims to increase opportunities for refugees currently residing in Kenya, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe to continue their higher education in Italy,” it added.
The agency warned applicants against engaging in malpractices during the application process, adding that this would lead to disqualification.
“The submission of fraudulent school certificates or university diplomas is a criminal offense. All documents submitted will be thoroughly verified by experts. Any attempt to present fraudulent documents will result in disqualification from this and future opportunities ” it stated.
