Kenyan woman Jacqueline Kitulu named World Medical Association President

Jacqueline Kitulu has been appointed as the president of the World Medical Association (WMA) for 2025-2026. The WMA is a global organization that advocates for the rights and interests of doctors worldwide.

Founded in 1947, the World Medical Association has seen Jacqueline Kitulu make history as the second Kenyan and the first Kenyan woman to clinch its top seat. She has been in medical practice for over 15 years, which largely contributed to her votes in the fiercely contested elections.

The votes were cast at the WMA 75th General Assembly meeting in Helsinki, Finland. Jacqueline Kitulu garnered 100 votes to 24, beating Professor Caldas Alfonso of Portugal.

Dr Samuel Karanja was the first Kenyan to hold the WMA President title, from 1995 to 1996. Remarkably, these were years that brought the largest change for the medical industry in Kenya.

Currently, Jacqueline Kitulu is the President of the Kenya Medical Association, an association made up of doctors and dentists mandated to promote the practice of medicine in Kenya.

She was chair of the Kenya Medical Women’s Association from 2008 to 2012 and the 1st Deputy Governor of the Kenya Red Cross Society. She also sits on several other boards.

Dr Kitulu holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Management from Strathmore Business School.

“Dr Kitulu has an MBA in Healthcare Management from Strathmore Business School and believes that this has gone a long way in bridging the communication gap between her health background and her current policy-influencing position in a bid to transform the Health sector in Kenya,” states the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

”She is also a recipient of many awards including the most recent one, the Distinguished Service Award from the Kenya Medical Association 2019,’ the information read in part.
