Lang’ata Member of Parliament Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has opened up about his decision to quit Milele FM.
The lawmaker, who worked as a radio presenter at the Mediamax-owned station, exited in 2020 after employment terms disagreement with Mediamax, which fired almost its entire newsroom at K24 TV.
Recalling the incident in a recent interview with Alex Mwakideu on Radio 47, Jalang’o revealed he did not consent to a pay cut by the company.
He added that he was among the individuals listed for a pay cut despite generating a lot of revenue through his show, which he co-hosted alongside Alex Mwakideu.
“I firmly rejected the idea of having my salary deducted during such a challenging period. Our show was making more money due to advertisements.’’ He recalled.
He later agreed to the pay cut since it affected everyone, but things took a different turn when the station requested all its employees to sign a new contract.
Jalang’o: How I used my first KISS FM salary when Radio Africa employed me
“I agreed to the deduction since they said it was going to affect everyone. Then they asked me to sign a new contract. I called Mwakideu at night and told him that I was not going to report to work the following morning. I quit the job. I was jobless for two hours,” he said.
After the exit, the endeared emcee revealed he received six lucrative job offers in one day. Besides Milele FM, Jalang’o has also hosted radio morning shows at Standard’s Radio Maisha, Royal Media Services’ Hot 96, and Radio Africa’s Kiss FM.
“We revolutionized the radio industry and turned our show into the number one most-listened-to program in Kenya when working for Radio Maisha. I then approached the company to request a salary increase, but they refused, thinking I was joking. ”
“One day, I handed in my resignation letter. They questioned why, stating that one can’t earn more than their boss. After some discussions, I decided to leave. I later joined Hot96, and our show gained immense popularity,” he added.
The Chief Executive Officer of Arena Media quit radio in 2022 to join politics. He won the hotly contested Lang’ata MP seat on an ODM Party ticket.
