Expansion of James Gichuru – Rironi highway stalls

James Gichuru Rironi Road Progress: Expansion of Nairobi Nakuru highway stalls due to lack of funds. This comes after the contractor dismissed over 700 workers.

The contractor has blamed the government over what he terms as delayed release of funds. The stalled parts have been causing endless traffic jams. Suppliers of raw materials have also been complaining that they are yet to paid.

Reports say that the project has been struggling since last year. Chinese firm Wu Yi has been contracted by the roads authority to upgrade the road.

Wu Yi won the Sh. 16.4 billion tender in July to expand the stretch to a six lane highway within 36 months. The stretch starts from the James Gichuru Road junction to the Mai Mahiu turnoff on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The project is part of the Sh. 59 billion KenHa plan to improve the thoroughfare from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to ease traffic congestion in Nairobi.

Major works that will be done on the project will include construction of 44km of six-metre wide service roads, as well as the construction of 3.4m wide non-motorised transport lanes on either side of the entire highway to ensure road users’ safety. James Gichuru Rironi Road Progress.
