James Ngare, popularly known as Barber wa Taifa, is a Nakuru-based barber whose contribution to society cannot go unnoticed.
Ngare has created employment for 22 Kenyans and offers free cuts to homeless and street children in Nakuru County. Growing up, Ngare revealed he wanted to become a pilot, but the dream was stalled by financial difficulties.
“I may not be a pilot, but God had other plans; I am happy to create employment for the youth,” he stated.
He recounted indulging in business at a young age to supplement his mother’s income. While in High school, he would help out at a barber shop near his home in exchange for a few shillings.

The barbershop owner was very supportive and helped Ngare to hone his cutting skills. After high school, Ngare gave the job full concentration, with the end goal of setting up his own shop.
It was not long before his goal was accomplished. When he decided to get a bigger space for his business, he had about Sh100,000 in savings.
He managed to acquire the entire floor, which was being sold at Sh350,000 and started the business, which operates under the name Jimmyjey Barbers & Spa.
The business peaked quickly thanks to his loyal customers who referred their friends to his shop. He has offered his services to top celebrities and media personalities, including journalist Salim Swaleh, Pastor Anthony Mwangi (Pastor T), and Singer James Muhia (Moji Shortbabaa), among others.

“At Jimmy Jey, we believe every woman should be well taken care of by a professional in a comfortable environment. We are dedicated to providing the finest experience to all our clients,” it reads on the shop’s website.
He charges between Sh300 and Sh5,000, depending on the service. His success in business did not make him forget where he came from, and he gives free haircuts to the homeless and street children in Nakuru County.
In December 2022, Jimmyjey Barbers & Spa won the best barbershop of the year at the Nakuru City Mums and Dads Entrepreneur Awards (NCMD).
