Jeremy Awori, the CEO of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, is among the leaders whose purposeful leadership has shaped Kenya’s banking sector and Africa at large.
Since he was appointed CEO of Ecobank in March 2023, Awori has been instrumental in driving the bank’s strategic vision, with a focus on financial inclusion and digital transformation.
His professional career began as a pharmacist in the United Kingdom after earning a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Manchester in 1991.
He later pursued an MBA in Finance and International Business at McGill University, Canada, marking his entry into the banking sector.
Awori joined Standard Chartered Bank Kenya, where he was appointed the Head of Retail Banking at just 28 years old.

He rose through the ranks to hold senior positions, including regional Sales Director for the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa, culminating in his appointment as CEO of Standard Chartered Tanzania in 2008.
In 2013, he joined Absa Bank Kenya (then Barclays) as the CEO, where he led the institution for nearly a decade before exiting in October 2022.
He joined Ecobank in March 2023, succeeding Nigerian Ade Ayeyemi, who had led the institution since 2015.
Under Awori’s leadership, Ecobank has achieved remarkable milestones including securing a $400 million oversubscribed Eurobond issuance in November 2024 and reporting a $74 million net profit for Q3 2024.
His focus on innovation has driven initiatives such as cross-border payments, leveraging Ecobank’s extensive footprint across Africa to facilitate seamless transactions and foster economic integration.
Born in 1971 in Nairobi to a Kenyan father and a British mother, Awori attended St. Mary’s School in Nairobi. His mother served as a lawyer while his father was an engineer.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Manchester, Masters Business Admin degree from McGill University, and Masters Business Admin degree from INSEAD.
