Are you wondering why you are poor? Well, while there are various causes of poverty, a poverty mentality could be the reason why you are not living a full and happy life.
According to businessman and political strategist Jimi Wanjigi, When you’ve got a poverty mentality, your mindset is fixed on a solid belief that everything is hard to get.
”Poverty starts with mentality; if you believe you are poor and that you can never achieve. The second reason for poverty is when you decide your existence is just to survive that you can’t be greater than that, and that’s the most unfortunate thing’’. He said in an interview.
Wanjigi believes that one’s surroundings and the kind of information they consume hugely impacts their money behaviors.
”Poverty is a decision that comes out of a brainwash. You are meant to feel you can never be big. This is because money comes with freedom, so you have no obstacles, and there are many people who never want you to have that financial independence,’’  added Wanjigi.

He says that the only secret to accumulating wealth is by thinking big and actualizing your ideas. He notes that for an idea to remain fruitful for long, it should have prospects of changing lives.
”The greatest thing about all these is changing lives. For example, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is discovered and is a very big topic today because it’s changing lives; it’s going to take away people’s jobs,’’ he said.
According to A 2021 poverty study by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), at least five out of every 13 Kenyans live in poverty. In addition, 2 out of every 5 Kenyans in rural areas live in poverty, and two out of every six Kenyans in urban areas live in poverty.

KNBS observed that a population of 2,879,000 lived in extreme poverty between 2019 and 2021. AÂ person is considered to be in overall poverty if their consumption of items such as food and all other expenses falls below Sh3,947 in a month for rural areas and Sh7,193 for urban dwellers.
In Kenya, the poverty level is high in rural areas than in urban areas. According to Wanjigi, one way poverty can be alleviated is by embracing self-employment.
”We’ve never addressed something called productivity. Kenyans are not sure how to make money, but there are opportunities out there. Nobody educates you about self-employment. My advice to young people is to stop looking for employment. Create your own self-employment because this is the future of this country,” he advised.
