JKUAT student commits suicide after being denied US scholarship

Police are investigating an incident in which a first-year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of a five-floor hostel building.

The Saturday, March 30 incident is reported to have happened days after the student who was undertaking a course in Computer Science received a rejection letter from a University in the US where he had applied for a scholarship.

It also emerged that the deceased had also applied for a visa as he awaited a response from the institution.

After receiving the rejection letter, he went ahead to inform his father, who promptly responded by visiting the student at the hostel to calm him down.

Is your spouse, sibling, friend, neighbour having depression and you’re unaware?

However, this was not enough, as the student jumped off the building a moment after the father left the hostel. Well-wishers rushed to the scene swiftly, but their efforts to save his life were futile.

His body was moved to the Thika Level 5 Hospital for preservation, awaiting postmortem.

Jomo Kenyatta University Student Association (JKUSA) Secretary General Timothy Gitonga revealed that the deceased passed away at 8 pm on Saturday with the family confirming the same.

“It is on a sad note I have to announce the death of one of our students let’s pray for the family. It is a sad day for us,” he stated.
