Millions of Kenyans set to shop on Jumia in this year’s Black Friday

Jumia Black Friday 2019: Jumia expects 16 million visits from Kenyans to the platform during this year’s  Black Friday event to secure deals ahead of the shopping season.

The event will run from 8th – 29th November, with the theme: The Biggest Save of the Year. This year’s event is also billed as the biggest annual sale across all products on the e-commerce website. There will be deals of up to 90 per cent off on 10 million products, offered by leading brands such as Nivea, Samsung, Jameson, Hotpoint, Huggies, Unilever, Maybelline and Uka.

“Our teams have been working hand in hand with vendors to offer our customers the best Black Friday. We will feature once-in-a-year discounts across 10M products, so there is something for everyone. The biggest deals will be exclusively on the Jumia App – so download it now!” said Jumia Kenya CEO, Sam Chappatte.

Customers are encouraged to download the App to benefit from the best deals over the campaign. Over 2019, the share of Jumia’s sales originating from the App has continued to grow. The sales reached 48 per cent in October from 30 per cent in January. Desktop traffic share (which includes traffic from laptops) has dropped to less than 20 per cent, reflecting the popularity of smartphones.

App-only deals will include discount vouchers, flash sales, golden tickets (Sh. 50,000 voucher) and exclusive deals like Mbuzi for only Sh. 1,000 and motorbikes (boda boda) at Sh. 100 bob only.

Jumia customers will get free 6GB Airtel data, when they purchase smartphones from Jumia’s warehouse (Jumia Express), and up to an additional 10 per cent off when they pay with Airtel Money.

Google estimates that Kenya had 13 million active internet users in 2018. Major campaigns like Black Friday are widely seen as helping digitize the local economy by providing opportunities for customers to log on and save time and money.

This year’s Black Friday is expected to be the most inclusive yet, following the reduction in delivery fees across the country. Already, Jumia has entered into partnerships with Posta and Wells Fargo in a bid to boost delivery capacity across the country.
