Ian Toyota, an alumnus of Kakamega School, is among the 98 students sponsored by Equity Group to study abroad.
Speaking during the Airlift Ceremony, Toyota, who is set to study computer science at the US-based institution, expressed his gratitude to the Equity Group Foundation for the opportunity to study at the prestigious university.
”I got my first and only acceptance, Havard. So I was thrilled and grateful to God. As I progress through college, I know limitless opportunities await me… and all this because Equity College Counseling (ECC) program opened my eyes and showed me the way. I will never be grateful enough to the whole ECC team and Equity Bank as a whole,’’ he said.
The Equity Group Foundation scholarship will see 98 learners from Kenya (73), Rwanda (19), the Democratic Republic of Congo (5), and Uganda (1) travel abroad to join 52 global universities located in 18 countries.
The scholars drawn from the Equity Leaders Programs in the four countries secured scholarships valued at Sh2.44 billion. They will be pursuing undergraduate studies for a period of four years in different universities across the globe.

The listed universities are in the United States of America (USA), Canada, United Kingdom, China, India, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Hungary, among others.
Each of the students will be provided with an airlift token of up to Sh. 200,000 to support the transition into their global universities.
Equity Group CEO James Mwangi congratulated the learners and urged them to remain focused on their studies.
Mwangi further advised the students to give a special eye on Technology-enabled ecosystems as it is where they have an opportunity to make a significant impact.
“As you step into this new phase of your life, remember that you have earned your place competitively among thousands of applicants from around the globe. You have differentiated yourself and demonstrated that you have what it takes to be a true global citizen.”

“I urge you to keep that focus in your quest for knowledge. You will be joining academic institutions that work collaboratively with the private sector and research and who invest in cutting-edge technology necessary to give you globally competitive knowledge and skills.”
“Take advantage and learn as much as you can but keep a lens on how such technologies and systems can empower you to innovate solutions to Africa’s challenges,” Mwangi said.
The Equity Leadership Program is an Equity Group Foundation initiative that was established in 1998 as a rigorous leadership development program for top-performing Kenyan students.
The scholars are exposed to a high-performing environment and are taught the values of hard work, work ethics, customer service, communication skills, integrity, and professionalism.
Since its inception, 7,482 scholars have benefitted from internships at Equity Bank prior to joining local or global universities.
