KCB vs. KDF: Anticipated clash in inaugural Kenya Cup Volleyball Tournament

The inaugural Kenya Cup Volleyball Tournament is set to kick off on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Nyayo Stadium, featuring an exciting matchup between Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

This five-month competition, organized by the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), aims to develop talent and promote the sport across the nation. KCB, the reigning national league champions, have been placed in Pool B with strong contenders: Kenya Pipeline, Kenya Army, and KDF. Head coach Japheth Munala expressed his confidence in the team’s preparedness for the tournament, especially after their strong showing in the third leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation League.

He noted, “My players gave their all and stood out after their exemplary performance on the court. I believe we will maintain the same focus and drive as we take on KDF in the Kenya Cup Tournament.” A major boost for KCB is the return of left attacker Juliana Namutira, who missed the third leg due to an ankle injury. Namutira, who joined KCB in 2023, played a key role in their past achievements and was named the Most Valuable Player during last season’s playoffs.

Eager to contribute, she shared, “I feel that I am in great shape after recovering from injury and I can’t wait to get back into action. I am looking forward to playing my part to help us win against KDF. It won’t be an easy match, but we are also ready and confident to face the challenge.”

The KCB roster is further bolstered by the addition of libero Carren Jelagat, who recently transferred from KDF, adding an interesting twist to the upcoming match. Young talents like Fridah Boke and Marlene Terry are also expected to play significant roles alongside experienced players such as Mercy Moim, Belinda Barasa, Edith Wisa, and Shirleen Maiywa. Currently, KCB is positioned fifth in the league standings, trailing behind Kenya Pipeline and Pris.
