Kenya Prison warders salary: Prison officers started receiving new commuter allowances at the end of January 2018. Initially, the Government planned to pay constables living in Nairobi Sh. 18, 124 per month in house allowances, while those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Meru and Uasin Gishu were to receive Sh. 13, 124. Those working in other counties were to be paid Sh. 8, 124.But after consultations, it emerged that the Government has a policy not to pay allowances that exceed or are almost half of an employee’s salary.
An internal proposal then showed that the Government planned to pay the lowest cadres – constable and corporal – Sh. 9, 500 in house allowance, for those in Nairobi. Constables would earn Sh. 3, 000 in commuter allowance while corporals would be paid Sh. 4, 000. Officers in the same rank in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega would earn Sh. 7, 000, while those working in other regions would get Sh. 5, 500.

A sergeant in Nairobi would earn Sh. 9, 800 as house allowance, Sh. 4, 000 as commuter allowance while those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega would get Sh. 7, 300 in house allowance. Those working in other regions would earn Sh. 5, 700. A senior sergeant of police in Nairobi was expected to receive Sh. 15, 700 in house allowance, Sh. 4, 000 in commuter allowance while those working in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega would earn Sh. 11, 300 in house allowance. Those working in other regions would be paid Sh. 8, 150.
A police inspector in Nairobi would earn Sh. 24, 000 in house allowance, Sh. 4, 000 in commuter allowance while those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega will get Sh. 15, 000 in allowance. The rest will be paid Sh. 11, 000. A chief inspector in Nairobi will be paid Sh. 27,000 as house allowance, Sh. 5,000 in commuter allowance while those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega would get Sh. 18,000 in house allowance. The rest would be paid Sh. 13, 000.
A senior superintendent in Nairobi would earn a house allowance of Sh. 36, 000, Sh. 8, 000 in commuter allowance while those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega would get Sh. 28, 000 house allowance. The rest would earn Sh. 21, 500. An officer of the rank of commissioner of police in Nairobi would get a house allowance of Sh. 45, 000, Sh. 12, 000 in commuter allowance while those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega would get Sh. 34, 000 house allowance. Those in other regions would be paid Sh. 24, 000. An Assistant Inspector General of police in Nairobi was expected to earn a house allowance of Sh. 55, 000, Sh. 16, 000 in commuter allowance, while those in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, Kitale and Kakamega would pocket Sh. 40, 000 house allowance. The rest would be paid Sh. 28, 800.
