Kenyan employers: Courses and skills that will get you a job faster

There are countless cases of educated Kenyans who have never found a job since their graduation. Others have given up on ever finding a formal job and fallen into the jua kali sector.

In some case, we have seen graduates burning up their academic certificates in frustrations.To get a job as fast as possible, what would you need?

Well, according to a survey report that was conducted by the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), Nexford University, and Africa Digital Media Institute,  employers are looking for workers who hold a Bachelor’s degree or workers who have technical and vocational education qualifications. This report was titled Skills Needs Survey.

According to the survey on what Kenyan employers are looking for, the sectors, courses and skills that will land you a job faster include the following:

1). Information , Communication and Technology. (Ability to communicate and collaborate on digital platforms, skilled usage of electronics, machine ware, smart components, communication technology and digital security).

2). Social Skills including effective communication, Critical thinking abilities, Collaboration and team work, Creativity, Problem solving, Conflict resolution, Effective written and oral communication.

3). Engineering (Computer and Software engineering, Electrical and electronics engineering, Mechanical and Production engineering, Civil and Construction engineering, Chemical and process engineering, agricultural engineering, biomedical engineering, petroleum engineering).

4). Transportation, distribution and logistics. This category is in demand at the Tvet level together with social service and community development, hospitality, and tourism.

5). Finance, Business Management and  Law (together with IT) have a great demand for applicants who have the relevant Bachelor’s degree.

6). Enterprises in the education sector, non-profit, forestry, manufacturing, and fishing have demand and low job intakes due to skills mismatch by applicants.

7). Building and Construction, and architecture have demand if applicants have TVET qualifications and practical skills.

8). Masters qualifications were in demand in Media, communication and public relations while PhD was in demand in the field of science and mathematics.
