Meet Kenyan farmer using chicken poop to power his home, car, cooker, water boiler

In Kenya, local farmer Anthony Muigai has found an innovative and sustainable solution to power his farm, household, and even his car – chicken poop!

With the rising costs of traditional energy sources and concerns about environmental impact, Anthony’s creative use of chicken waste to produce biogas has become a blessing in disguise.

Each day, Anthony gathers chicken feces from his farm and combines it with water. He then pours this mixture into a biogas digester, where the waste is broken down, resulting in the production of biogas as a byproduct.

The biogas produced from the breakdown of chicken feces is a versatile energy source that Anthony employs to power a diverse range of appliances.

By linking the biogas digester to power outlets in both his farm and home, he has effectively replaced his dependence on Kenya Power and Lighting Company and eliminated the need to purchase costly cooking gas.

With a continuous supply of poop from his chickens, he now has a dependable source of energy to meet his energy needs sustainably.

Initially, Anthony had been using cow dung as the main material for his biogas digester.

However, he switched to chicken poop after researching and finding that it could be just as effective. He installed a biogas plant on his farm, investing Sh. 117,000 to get it up and running.

While the initial cost was significant, Anthony quickly realized that the benefits far outweighed the expenses in the long run.

Managing the biogas plant became much more manageable after the installation. Anthony simply needed to mix the chicken feces with water to ensure smooth flow and feed it into the digester.

With approximately 400 chickens on his farm, producing about 40 kilograms of waste daily, he has a steady and renewable source of biogas to power his farm and household.

“I don’t need to worry about anything like running out of gas or I don’t have money to buy gas. As long as my chicken keeps on pooping I am sorted,” said Antony.

The advantages of using chicken poop as a source of biogas are numerous.

Firstly, it is a sustainable and renewable energy source that relies on the natural process of decomposition. As long as chickens continue to produce feces, Anthony has a constant supply of biogas, reducing his dependence on fossil fuels and electricity from the grid.

This not only saves him money on energy costs but also reduces his carbon footprint, contributing to environmental conservation.

Secondly, using chicken poop as a raw material for biogas production is a form of waste management. Instead of allowing the waste to accumulate and create environmental problems, Anthony is utilizing it to generate energy.

This helps to reduce pollution and improve the overall cleanliness and hygiene of his farm.

Furthermore, the biogas produced from chicken poop is a versatile source of energy that can power various appliances.

From cooking stoves for preparing meals to farm equipment for agricultural activities, phone chargers for staying connected, and shower heaters for hot water, Anthony has found multiple applications for the biogas on his farm and household.

This has provided him with convenience and energy independence, as he no longer needs to worry about running out of gas or electricity.

Additionally, Anthony has even found a way to use the biogas to power his car. By connecting a pipe from his biogas plant to a generator, he charges his electric car, further reducing his reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to a greener transportation solution.
