Business owners call for Government downsizing post Finance Bill protests

By Natasha Gamalie.

Following recent protests against the Finance Bill, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) outlined eight proposed government reforms.

KEPSA acknowledged the legitimacy of concerns raised by young protesters in a recent statement.

The statement outlined eight proposed government reforms aimed at revitalizing Kenya’s economy.

The private sector players, on the other hand, indicated that one of the ways they would engage in the austerity measures is through pushing for the downsizing of the governments in a bid to reduce a high level of recurrent expenditure.

On the other hand, the business owners were also of the view that the government needed to trim a lot of wastage and utilize the available resources judiciously.

Moreover, they argued that tax compliance needs to be improved and the government uses the available resources to implement projects and take the war against graft a notch higher.

“Re-evaluate the current economic model to ensure Kenya’s economic growth agenda is not compromised,” read the statement in part.

In addition, the private sector said it would advance the cause of the involvement of youth in policy-making.

On the improved concerns brought forth by Kenyans, private sector players have said they would want to see a reconstituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The private sector also wants the youth to be represented in the proposed IEBC reforms.

“In the long term, we realize that the current economic and political models are not serving us in achieving Vision 2030. The system is broken, and we, as a country, must bring all to the table to craft a system that doesn’t exclude over 60% from economic and political participation,” read the statement in part.

KEPSA members are the largest employers in the country. The Kenya Association of Manufacturers ( KAM) is a member.
