Kevin Mulei: Meet Nairobi businessman who owns NRG Radio

NRG Radio is one of the popular radio stations in Kenya and Africa’s first fully integrated audio-visual radio station, which combines music and entertainment for a youth-focused, multi-platform audience.

The station broadcasts in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, and parts of Uganda. NRG first went on air in March 2018 following its launch by businessman Kelvin Mulei.

Born in Kisikeni Village in Machakos County, Mulei has emerged as one of the renowned businesspeople in Kenya’s creative industry. He is also the founder of the once-popular Groove Awards and Mo Sound Events.

Narrating his journey in a past interview, Mulei revealed he was introduced into the business world by his grandmother, who raised him after his parents left for work in Uganda.

After completing high school, he began his career as a DJ before later deciding to fully focus on business in the early 2000s.

His first business venture flopped due to financial challenges which left him in debts forcing him to relocate to America for greener pastures.

After a year in the US, he came back to Kenya and started Groove Awards with the vision of promoting, supporting, and celebrating talented gospel musicians in Kenya. The business peaked, gaining popularity in the entire East African region.

He later opened Mo Sound Events, a creative company that organizes events, provides production services, digital media, and entertainment equipment with operations across East and Central Africa.

His innovations have seen him win various awards, including the 2019 African Entertainment Promoter Award from Voice Achievers Awards.

In 2020, Mulei joined the KCB Lions’ Den and, through Mo Sound, he hosted the Global Entrepreneurship Summit that was attended by Barack Obama in Nairobi.

Besides these businesses, the father of three also acts as an advisory board member for Diamond Junior School, which was founded by his wife in 2009.

He owns luxurious cars, with the most famous one being the hybrid BMW i8, which he reportedly paid Sh24 million to import.
