How educated is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s sister Kristina Wambui Pratt? Kristina is the eldest daughter of Founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

She was born in 1952, just as Kenya slipped into an emergency season due to the fight for independence. She was largely raised by her grandmother Nyokabi Muhoho, and reportedly saw her father, Mzee Jomo, for the first time in 1960.

Kristina attended Hospital Hill Primary School from 1962 to 1964 when she lived with the family of Sir Derek Erskine – a liberal member of the Legislative Council in the colonial government in Nairobi.

In 1965, she was transferred to St. George’s Primary School. She later proceeded to Kenya High School where she completed her secondary education.

She began her tertiary studies at an art college in Allentown, Pennsylvania (PA), USA, and specialized in working with the disabled. She moved to Kutztown State College (PA), where she earned a bachelor’s degree in special education in 1974.

She graduated from Lehigh University in 1976 in Bethlehem (PA) with a Masters of Science, also in Special Education.

In 2022, Kristina was awarded with a degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causal) by the Kenyatta University.

Kristina has travelled to different destinations while helping People Living with Disabilities which even compelled former US President Jimmy Carter to honour her with United States Presidential Award in 1980.

Kristina joined the Ministry of Education in 1975. She became the founding Director of the Department of Special Education and played a major role in establishing the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE).

This institute was charged with training teachers from different colleges in special needs education, conducting research, performing functional assessments, and rehabilitating and producing assistive materials for people with special needs.

In 1977, she was appointed UNESCO Ambassador for the Visually Impaired in Africa. In 1979, Mrs. Pratt also received the Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped Award for her outstanding contribution to the mentally handicapped in Kenya.
