Kuppet ends teachers' strike; signs return-to-work deal with TSC

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has ended the its teachers’ strike. Kuppet has also inked a return-to-work deal with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

“After a daylong meeting, we are happy to report to the nation that we have reached an amicable settlement which will enable out teachers resume duty immediately,” said TSC chief executive officer Dr. Nancy Macharia.

The deal between Kuppet and the TSC came as the strike entered its second week on Monday, prompting some secondary schools in the country to start sending their students back home.

“From the union side, we suspend the strike and ask all our teachers to go back to class pending the speedy resolution of these matters as already agreed on between us and the commission,” said Kuppet secretary general Akelo Misori.

The Kuppet teachers had gone on strike demanding for the promotion of 130,000 teachers, absorption of 46,000 JSS teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and remittance of statutory deductions and loans.

They also wanted the TSC to fully implement the 2021-25 Collective Bargaining Agreement, and fully pay their emoluments for the month of July, as well as release Sh. 15 billion for their medical cover.

“The government has implemented all the provisions of the 2021-25 CBA with the teacher unions specifically the second phase of the CBA which was due on July 1, 2024,” said Dr. Macharia.
