Boy who reported to Kangaru School with rooster as school fees excels in KCSE

Lawrence Murimi, a student who reported to Kangaru School in Embu County with a chicken as his fee, has finally completed his secondary education, recording an excellent performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Murimi’s performance was shared by televangelist Bishop Ben Kiengei, one of the well-wishers who came forward to sponsor him after his story went viral in 2022.

“Lawrence Murimi, thank you for making me a proud man. He has passed with flying colours,” Kiengei wrote on his Facebook page.

Murimi’s story went viral in 2022 after photos of him carrying a rooster as fees for admission at Kangaru School went viral on social media. The then 14-year-old was dressed in his primary school uniform accompanied by his mother.

It emerged that the young man who had scored 313 marks in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) could not afford school fees and the rooster was his only hope.

His plea was, however, turned down by the principal leaving him and his mother in tears. The emotional story touched the hearts of many Kenyans some of whom offered to sponsor his education.

Kameme TV presenter Muthee Kiengei is among the many well-wishers who came to his aid and ensured the boy was admitted to school.

He announced that Kiengei Live Media would cover the student’s entire school fees while calling the public for additional support.

Former Water Cabinet Secretary Cicily Kariuki, an alumnus of the school, contributed a full year’s school fees for the boy who later got enrolled into his dream school.

A visibly elated boy was pictured in the school alongside his mother, with one of the pictures capturing Kangaru School principal helping him to dress up.
