Boxer, is a hardworking, but naïve and ignorant cart horse in George Orwell’s 1945 novel Animal Farm. Boxer is the allegory’s tragic hero. He is a hard worker, shown as the farm’s most dedicated, strong, loyal and caring. He also fights bravely against the humans.
Whenever something goes wrong, he blames himself and vows to work even harder.
His favorite sayings are ‘Napoleon is always right’ and ‘I will work harder’. He is the strongest animal and could easily fight off the pigs and dogs. He never does though, as he is too loyal – used to taking orders.
Boxer’s efforts to make the windmill show he is a great worker. Text quotes Boxer, thus: To see him toiling up the slope inch by inch, his breath coming fast, the tips of his hoofs clawing at the ground, and his great sides matted with sweat, filled everyone with admiration.
This description of Boxer is very emotive and inspirational. It shows how hard he works. The image of him dragging huge rocks whilst dripping with sweat shows great strength. Boxer hardly ever complains. Never lacks motivation.
Boxer is uneducated and struggles to express himself and his thoughts. It’s heartbreaking, to read of his deficiency in articulate thought process: He set his ears back, shook his forelock several times and tried to marshal his thoughts; but in the end he could not think of anything to say.

Unfortunately, Boxer, like a lot of the other animals, except the pigs, lacked an education. Orwell uses Boxer to show that without the benefit of learning, he cannot express himself and so he will never be able to speak out against the pigs.
Candidly, as per the times, Boxer serves as an allegory for the Russian working-class who helped to oust Tsar Nicholas and establish the Soviet Union, but were eventually betrayed by the Bolsheviks. In modern times, the literature book still makes sense. Education doesn’t guarantee success, but it’s a powerful catalyst that smoothens the path to success and, inevitably, self-actualization.
Modern-day education has many variants. There’s home-schooling. Learners have teachers and tutors brought to their homes. It’s less pronounced, and elite. The bulk of the Kenyan citizenly attend public and private schools. There is boarding and day schooling options.
