Lower milk prices expected as supply increases

Lower milk prices are expected in Kenya from July as milk supply continue to increase. Currently the supply of raw milk has grown by 10 per cent, giving indication that Kenyans will start to enjoy milk at lower prices between June and August.

According to the Kenya Dairy Board, milk volumes will stabilise at the beginning of August and the prices could go back to Sh. 45 for fresh brand and Sh. 50 for the long life type.

The price of half a litre of milk had shot to Sh. 75 from Sh. 45 in January in supermarkets across Nairobi following a prolonged drought.

The board further notes that the volumes of milk collected by processors fell by 36 per cent from 56.44 million litres in October 2016 to 36.11 million litres in February this year.
