Mobile-phone bond M-Akiba starts trading on NSE

The mobile-phone based M-Akiba bond is set to start trading on the Nairobi Securities Exchange today.

The bond worth Sh. 150 million attracted 5,692 investors who bought the government paper.

Buying and selling of the three-year bond at the bourse will be done exclusively via handsets, removing the need for a bank account.

Data from the National Treasury showed that 102,632 people registered on M-Akiba mobile phone bond platform but only 5.5 per cent actually invested in the inaugural digital paper.

During the bond sale, individual investors bought the bond in different chunks ranging from Sh. 3,000 to Sh. 1.13 million.
