Martha Karua: Why I rejected plum cabinet job offer from Uhuru

Former Cabinet Secretary Martha Karua has revealed that she received a plum cabinet position offer from President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2017 General Elections. Ms. Karua, who is also the leader of the political party Narc Kenya said that she turned down the position because it compromised on her stand at the time.

Martha Karua said that she rejected the offer because it would have been similar to condoning what she believed was a rigged Kirinyaga gubernatorial election. “The president did ask me to be part of his government. That I will disclose. And I declined. I told him frankly that these people had rigged me and I was going to court and I did not wish to join the government. It would be wrong to be rigged and accept a consolation prize. I would have been guilty of normalizing rigging. It is better to be out and battle it,” she said in an interview that was published by the Sunday Nation.

She added that she was convinced that she could not fit in government because of the way it was composed.

“I also felt that I would not fit in the government because you could already see the composition. I had already been in government before and I could see that it would be difficult for me to fit,” she said.
