Communications Authority Chairperson Mary Wambui has suspended Ezra Chiloba from his position as Director General.

Wambui announced the changes in an internal memo citing unspecified reasons. She then appointed Christopher Wambua as the Director General in acting capacity until further notice.

“Following a meeting of the Authority’s Board held on September 18. resulting in the suspension of the Director General, I am pleased to inform all staff of the appointment of Christopher Wambua as a Director General in Acting Capacity effective today till further notice,” a statement by Wambui said.

Chiloba joined CA in September 2021 after a competitive recruitment process that saw him beat over 100 applicants for the top job.  He replaced Francis Wangusi, whose second and final term ended in 2019.

Wambui is an ally of President William Ruto. She was appointed to the Communications Authority after the inauguration of Dr. Ruto in 2022. During former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure, she faced multi-billion court cases over allegations of tax evasion.

She famously hid in Dr. Ruto’s Weston Hotel to avoid arrest by the police and officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority. Her court cases were dropped after Dr. Ruto came to power.
