Mercy Tarus: Bold girl who lectured Mandago, Uasin Gishu politicians over Finland scholarships scam

Mercy Tarus: Bold girl who lectured Mandago, Uasin Gishu politicians over Finland scholarships scam

A brave girl from Uasin Gishu boldly lectured Senator Jackson Mandago and his fellow politicians from Uasin Gishu County over the Finland & Canada higher education scholarships that have now turned out to be scam.

Mercy Tarus calmly narrated how poor parents had sacrificed to come up with hundreds of thousands of money to ensure their kids were airlifted to Finland for higher education only to end up getting scammed.

Mercy Tarus bravely reminded Senator Mandago and other politicians they were taking care of their children and sending them to prestigious schools abroad, and at the same time scamming children of the poor who had been enrolled in the program.

Taking a firm tone, she bashed the leaders for lying and not serving the people as per their commitments to them despite being elected democratically.

“I want to ask you one question. Do you know the medicine for depression? Do you know any anti-depressant? You don’t. I studied with Beryl, (Barrot’s daughter) she is in the UK right now as we speak,” said Tarus.

“The others are in the UK and Canada. Your children are abroad, and you told our parents, aren’t these children ours too? Aren’t they all ours? Where is Barorot’s child here? Where are Mandago’s children?” she questioned.

The 2021 Kabarak University graduate accused the deputy governor Engineer John Barrot of being constantly deceitful whether interacting with parents or students.

“We’ve heard enough stories since I paid my money. We did not put the leaders there to give us stories. We can get them online. All we want is for the leaders to refund our money,” she emotionally told the panel.

After failing to go abroad, Mercy Tarus now runs a small salon in Eldoret town, where she works as a hairdresser. During the weekends, she resorts to selling uji and mandazi to make ends meet after her parents lost Sh. 900,000 in the controversial project.

Tarus is also a poem writer; she loves creating awareness on mental health issues. She was poised to study at the Northern Lights College in Canada, pursuing a two-year diploma course in social service.

Her flight was scheduled in December 2022 but was immediately cancelled by leaders, claiming it was the effects of the Russia-Ukraine battle. Her flight was postponed to February 2023.

“My plan was to finish the course and start working so I can repay the loans then I can further my studies on my money, but they did this to us,” she said, adding that it was the reason she called them liars.
