Miss Trudy: How I made Sh. 1 million from my first year on Airbnb

Lifestyle YouTuber and travel content creator Miss Trudy has made a comeback online after a short break. She shared that her break was spent launching a new venture.

In a YouTube video, Miss Trudy explained that she took a break to focus on managing her AirBnB.

“I’ve been missing in action. Life has been busy on my end, so I had to take a break,” she said.

She shared that her father inspired her to invest in real estate. Miss Trudy saved up to buy an apartment in Nairobi’s Kilimani neighbourhood.

She dreamed of earning passive income to support her content creation career by renting out an apartment on Airbnb while she travelled to tell African stories and shoot content.

To make this dream a reality, she invested in furnishing the apartment and hired an interior designer to turn it into a beautiful space.

She revealed that Airbnb provides free marketing for a host’s space for the first three months, a perfect chance for her to promote her business on social media.

Miss Trudy noted that the venture was a success, earning her Sh. 195,000 ($1,500) from her first client who stayed at her apartment.

“He booked the apartment for the first month and just like that, I made $1,500.  It was amazing, I was so happy,” Miss Trudy enthusiastically stated.

“I’ve been able to make money from it. I just crossed one year on Airbnb, and it’s been an amazing experience.  I’ve been able to make over $9,000(Kshs 1.17 million) in my first year on Airbnb. That’s not a bad investment,” she stated.

Despite the success of her new venture, Miss Trudy has faced challenges in recent months with fewer clients, as international visitors have been avoiding the country due to ongoing anti-government protests impacting the tourism and Airbnb industries.

“In the last month I have made zero dollars, and the previous month I made less than half of what I am used to making. People are afraid of Kenya because of what they see online about the protests. People have even asked me not to go to Kenya,” she stated.

Miss Trudy encouraged her followers to consider getting into the business, even without owning property. She explained that renting from landlords and property owners can be quite profitable.
