Moi University announces reopening date after one-month closure

Moi University has announced the resumption of learning activities after one month of closure following student unrest.

In a statement, Moi University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Isaac Kosgey said all students will be expected to report back on Friday, November 8.

The reopening date was agreed upon after consultations with key stakeholders including officials from the University and Academic Staff Union (UASU).

Kosgey revealed that the university management board held a consultative meeting with the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) on Saturday, November 2.

The varsity is further set to hold a similar meeting on Monday, November 4, before another negotiation meeting on Tuesday.

The VC further revealed there will be a negotiation meeting and signing of the Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF) with UASU and KUSU on Wednesday, November 6.

Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala announced that the State Department for Higher Education officials will be at the varsity to witness the reopening of the institution.

“Moi University reopens! This is the schedule of activities leading to the reopening of Moi University. The State Department for Higher Education and Research will be at Moi University on Friday, November 8, 2024, to welcome the students back to the university,” Inyangala stated.

The university was closed on October 3 following protests by the students over poor management of the institution which affected learning activities.

The students called for the immediate resignation of the VC whom they accused of poor management of the school which saw lecturers and workers at the institution down their tools over delayed salaries.

The university is yet to pay three-month salaries to its more than 4,000 workers and has also failed to remit more than Sh1.2 Billion deducted from bank loans for some of the employees.
