Project documents indicate that the expressway will turn off before reaching Athi River. It will then turn towards Ongata Rongai and cut through Ngong. It will then join the Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Kikuyu with extensions to Mai Mahiu.
The express highway was initially set to include 473 kilometres.   When completed, it will allow uninterrupted speeds of 120 km/h, cutting travel time from 10 to four hours.
The mega project will be funded by US Export Credit Agencies, including the US Export-Import Bank and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation and is expected to be completed in six years.
