MPs demand monthly salary hike to Sh. 1.1 million, luxury car grants

Members of Parliament are demanding for their salaries to be raised to Sh. 1.1 million from the current range of Sh. 600,000 to Sh. 700,000. The MPs are also demanding for luxury car grants of up to Sh. 7.5 million.

The MPs also want the SRC to reinstate a monthly house allowance and raise the perks to Sh. 400,000. These demands, if accepted, will take their salaries to the same cadre with Court of Appeal judges.

Currently, the bicameral Parliament has 349 members in the National Assembly and 67 in the Senate, excluding the Speakers. This brings the total number of lawmakers in the two houses to 416.

The Parliamentary Service Commission(PSC) currently spends a minimum Sh. 3.54 billion annually or Sh. 295.36 million monthly on their salaries.

This means that every month, each MP earns a basic salary of Sh. 710,000. Each MP is also entitled to Sh. 20 million mortgage with 3 per cent interest.

MPs also enjoy a Sh. 5 million official car grant scheme that is supposed to enable them to buy luxury cars every five-year term, a personal car loan from the government of as much as Sh. 7 million repayable at an interest rate of three per cent interest.

MPs are also currently entitled to a weekly mileage allowance of Sh. 109 per kilometre for as many as 750 kilometres per week.

They also receive a generous medical allowance that also covers their spouses and as many as four children under  25 years.

Their new demand for a pay raise is set to place them in direct conflict with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission which instituted cuts to their salaries to tame the ballooning wage bill.
