NACADA warns against BnB rentals becoming drug abuse, drinking hotspots

By Brian Kipchumba

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has expressed concern over the growing misuse of Airbnb rentals as gathering spots for illegal drug use and excessive alcohol consumption.

In a statement released on Monday, the organization noted private rental properties, mostly those listed on platforms like Airbnb, are increasingly being used for wild parties involving drugs, underage drinking, and, in some unfortunate cases, fatal overdoses.

NACADA has intensified its crackdowns on illegal drug activities in clubs, residential areas and urban centres, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies. However, drug traffickers and users are shifting to more discreet locations, with Airbnb rentals becoming a preferred hideout for such activities.

The situation has risen to alarming levels. In Nairobi, multiple cases of young people overdosing at parties hosted in Airbnb rentals have been reported. A study showed that 23 per cent of urban youth aged 18-24 experiment with drugs at social gatherings, mostly in Airbnb’s.

NACADA boss, Dr Anthony Omerikwa assured that his organisation has ramped up monitoring and regulation efforts for these short-term rentals.

“We are witnessing a disturbing trend where these private spaces are being turned into drug dens. This situation calls for immediate action from all stakeholders, including Airbnb hosts, property managers, and the broader community,” Dr Omerikwa stated.

NACADA has urged short-term rental hosts and property managers to be more vigilant in screening guests and report any suspicious activities to authorities.

The agency is heightening its surveillance, increasing public awareness and working closely with law enforcement, county governments, and private sector stakeholders to tackle the issue directly.

Parents, guardians, and communities are expected to remain vigilant whilst actively engaging young people in positive activities to reduce their exposure to substance abuse and steer them away from the dangers of drug use.

“We must work together to protect our youth and ensure that these rental spaces are not misused for illegal activities,” the NACADA CEO added.
