The Nairobi Expressway Parent Company, Moja Express has announced that motorists plying on the Sh. 89 billion highway will be allowed to pay via M-Pesa.
This announcement brings heavy relief to millions of motorists who prefer mobile payments. Moja Expressway ruled out M-Pesa payments in May 2022, citing that it would result in traffic congestion at the tolling stations set up along the route.
Moja Expressway Company CEO Steve Zhao announced that the payment method would be incorporated beginning January 2023.

“We recently put great effort with the M-Pesa team and by January 15, 2023, you do not need to carry cash as M-Pesa will officially be availed as a payment option on the Nairobi Expressway,” he remarked.
In the current format set by Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of CRBC, motorists have only two payment options to access the route; cash or electronic card payment methods.
Under the electronic card payment means, motorists can either choose to have manual tolling cards or automatic cards, the latter of which allows motorists to go through the tolling stations faster.
To register for a manual tolling card, one must present their National ID and pay Sh. 300 for the card installation. Points worth at least Sh. 1,000 will then be loaded.
To register for the automatic electronic tolling cards, one would need to produce their National ID, car logbook and pay Sh. 1,000 upfront for installation. Points worth at least Sh. 2,000 will thereafter be loaded onto the card.
The expressway runs from Mlolongo through JKIA and Nairobi CBD to Westlands along Waiyaki Way. The route has 11 interchanges; Mlolongo, SGR, JKIA, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Center, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands and James Gichuru road.
