Nairobi man says he’s not paid rent for 3 years after landlord disappeared

A tenant in Nairobi’s Lavington area recently surprised many after confessing that he had not paid rent for three years after his landlord disappeared, never to be traced again.

Speaking with Maina Kageni on Classic 105, the man said that his landlord used to collect the rent himself at the end of every month but stopped showing up three years ago.

The caller added that he had paid rent for one year before the landlord disappeared, leaving him questioning whether he has family to take care of the property.

“I live in Lavington, and my landlord disappeared into thin air. He has never come. This is the third year I haven’t paid rent. I wonder whether he has relatives,” said the caller.

The tenant speculated that the landlord might have passed away and his family knew nothing about the property. He, however, revealed that he had been saving the rent and he would pay it if the landlord showed up.

“I am just here saving his rent. The day he will come, I hope he comes. I always keep his rent.”  He said.

On the Classic 105 breakfast show, Maina and King’ang’I had a discussion on why men hide their possessions from their wives and relatives.

The Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA) recently revealed there are Sh52 billion idle in an account at the Central Bank of Kenya as unclaimed assets.

“We want Ksh52 billion to go back to the mainstream economy because that is the main objective of having these unclaimed assets authority.” UFAA Chairperson Kigo Njenga said.

“We are in the process of telling people to come and get their money. We are doing a lot of advertisements, including printing names on the print media.” Kigo added.

A chunk of these assets, which include money in bank and M-Pesa accounts, cheques, contents in safe deposit boxes, matured life insurance policies, shares whose dividends have not been collected, etc, belong to dead men whose spouses and beneficiaries have no clue about.
