In today’s tech-driven world, even the restaurants are evolving. The latest trend in dining is the introduction of robots serving customers, thus representing a major change in the hospitality service concept.
These tech-savvy assistants are transforming the process of delivering food to tables, providing a preview of the future dining experience.
One of the most notable aspects of these robotic servers is their exceptional efficiency in managing orders.
The robots feature built-in trays specifically designed to receive food orders directly from the kitchen staff.
After being loaded, the robot effortlessly manoeuvres through the busy restaurant, heading straight to the assigned table where customers eagerly anticipate their meals.
The entire process is smooth and quick thus reducing wait times and ensuring that food is served hot and fresh. The technology powering these robots is remarkable. Their operation is driven by self-driving technology.
They are powered by artificial intelligence (AI) which enhances their ability to avoid obstacles which is important for the usually crowded restaurant setting.
Whether it’s maneuvering around tables, dodging chairs, or avoiding human traffic, the robots exhibit a level of precision and adaptability ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted service.
At a café located in Lana Plaza Complex along Oloitoktok Road, Nairobi, AI is taking centre stage. Robot Cafe isn’t just using robotic servers to deliver food; these robots are programmed to handle various tasks.
A walk into the cafe and the automated waiters greet you with a warm screen smile akin to a human face. John Kariuki is the manager of this first-of-its-kind restaurant that uses technology. He shared his excitement about the capabilities of these machines.
“Right now, we have only programmed them to host, serve customers, attend birthdays, or whatever occasion that might be there. It will come and sing for you.”
These machines have in-built trays ready to serve customers and receive food from the staff. They have been programmed to navigate the restaurant to the designated table upon which the customer picks up their order.

Additionally, these AI-powered self-driving tech companions enhance the customer’s dining experience.
“If it is your birthday, it will come and acknowledge that you have booked a reservation. It is amazing, it wowed us after learning what it can do. Basically, it incorporates AI and other systems to deliver,” Wangui explained.
For instance, if a customer has booked a table for a special occasion, the robot can recognize this and deliver a customized experience, whether it’s a birthday greeting or a special song.
The inception of these restaurants with robots is set to change the face of the food service industry. However, this marvel shall not render front office staff obsolete. Only time will tell how the tide will roll.
