New ID cards to cost Sh. 1,000; replacement to cost Sh. 2,000

Turning age 18 is no longer free. From now onwards, Kenyans will pay Sh. 1,000 to acquire new ID cards. Previously, this service has been free since independence.

At the same time, replacing a national ID card will now cost Sh. 2,000. These price hikes follow the increase of prices that were announced by the Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki through a gazette notice.

Prices associated with passports have also been readjusted upwards. Acquiring a 34 page passport has also been hiked from Sh. 4,500 to Sh. 7,500. The 50 page passport booklet will now cost Sh. 9,500 from the previous Sh. 6,000.

At the same time, the 66 page passport will now cost Sh. 12,500 up from Sh. 7,500. Those looking to get diplomatic passports will pay Sh. 15,000 up from Sh. 7,500.

Fees have also been introduced and others hiked for services that involve registration of births and deaths.

For instance, certification of current birth will now cost Sh. 200 up from Sh. 50. This will be the same cost for certification of current death. Late registration of birth certificate will cost Sh. 500 up from Sh. 150.
