Nyashinski: I used to earn Sh. 90,000 per week when I first moved to US

Nyashinski: A few years ago, popular Kenyan musician Nyamari Ongegu alias Nyashinki took a musical hiatus and migrated to the United States.

In the US, he got a job delivering proof slips that show proof of a transaction to banks. “I just wanted to look for work and start making money,” he said.

He would drive around collecting the documents from various institutions and delivering them to banks. “Many Kenyans do that job over there. I was getting Sh. 90,000 per week,” he said. “It was a full day’s job. I lived with a little dog, and the money sustained me just fine, though the living expenses were higher there than here.”

Nyashinski later linked up with his brother-in-law who lived in Dallas, who helped him secure another job as a truck driver. This new job was paying much better and the two managed to buy a truck of their own.

“I was happy to leave Kenya. I had started getting tired of keeping up with the momentum of releasing good music. Plus the allure of the US we saw in movies was enticing,” he said. Nyashinski however decided to return to Kenya and pursue his love for music. His decision has paid off, as the musician has now become a household name in the local music scene.
