Nyeri County admits having 102 rat catchers on payroll

Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has admitted that that his county has 102 rat catchers on its payroll.

Kahiga made the admission when he appeared before the Senate County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC). He said that the rat catchers are among a group of workers who will be deemed as redundant.

“We are looking at how we will release them. We do not want to have people walking around doing nothing,”ssaid Kahiga.

The Governor claimed that the majority of these were inherited from previous local authorities and had been serving under the provincial authority prior to the execution of the 2010 constitution.

“We want to declare redundancies as part of a wider effort to bring down the wage bill,” he said.

The Governor further admitted that salaries for employees in Nyeri county amount to over Sh. 3,592,854,332. This is equivalent to 52 per cent of the total revenue of Sh. 6,956,824,044.

Governor Kahiga further said that his county also inherited all staff from the defunct Local Authorities which included Nyeri Municipal Council, Karatina Municipal Council, Othaya Town Council and Nyeri County Council.

“Though the County inherited those staff not all of them had the skills to assist the County to deliver its mandate compelling the County to fill those gaps where inherited staff had to be retained,” hes said.
