When the Kenya Defense Forces announced a soecial recruitment exercise targeting NYS graduates, there certainly was no expectation on how large a number of applicants would turn up.
But on Monday, September 18, 2023, thousands of desperate, jobless NYS graduates turned up for the KDF recruitment exercise at thr Embakasi Garrison Grounds in Nairobi.
In messages that were relayed last week, the KDF had disclosed that it would carry out the exercise that would target persons who had served under the NYS.
Every candidate was required to have a clearance letter from the NYS and a minimum of grade D Plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Good evening members, KDF will conduct recruitment at Embakasi Garrison on Monday, September 18 to September 22 to enlist only NYS potentials,” a message that leaked on social media stated.
“Requirements are D plain and above, NYS discharge letter with credit of character very good. Please pass that information to the relevant candidates.”
The large number of young people seeking to join the KDF was the latest loud message on the state of joblessness among young people in the country.
