The National Youth Service (NYS) has lowered the acceptable KCSE mean grade to attract more young people during recruitments.

The acceptable KCSE mean grade has now been brought down from D Plain to D Minus in a move that is expected to boost intake from marginalized areas in the country.

This was announced by the NYS Director General James Tambur when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.

The Ministry has lowered the mean grade to enable youths from disadvantaged communities to have an opportunity to join NYS,” he said, adding that the new acceptable grade will come into effect in the next scheduled recruitment exercise.

Young Kenyans who are interested in joining the NYS will also be required to present a valid and authentic certificate of good conduct that has been issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

They will also need to meet the age requirement of between 18 and 24 years, as well as be physically fit to undergo extensive training. Female candidates will also be required to not be pregnant at the time of recruitment and during the training.

Tembur further stated that the National Youth Service has a total of 2,201 officers, out of which 1,525 are male and 676 are female.

“We have promoted 944 male and 510 female officers. Fourteen of these officers we promoted were disabled,” he said.
