Omar Lali set free as DPP drops murder charge

Omar Lali, the boyfriend of the late Keroche heiress Tecra Muigai is now a free man. Lali was set free by the High Court in Garsen after the Director of Public Prosecutions dropped the murder case against him.

In dropping the charges, the DPP said that he would pursue an open inquest instead. “It is a matter we have discussed and explored each angle with a lot of keenness, and decided that for the sake of public interest and in the interest of justice, we pursue an open inquest,” State Counsel Edie Kadebe said.

Justice Roselyn Korir accepted the State’s application, and set Mr. Omar Lali free. “If found responsible in the inquest, the accused will be arrested once again and be charged as shall be advised,” she said.

The move comes days after the DPP moved a murder charge against the man.  Tecra, who was living with her boyfriend, Omar, at a private residence in Shella on Lamu Island, fell down a flight of stairs on Tuesday, April 28. She had arrived early April to visit Omar.

She was found unresponsive at the bottom of the staircase leading to their cottage by neighbours, who reportedly woke Lali. He was apparently asleep, unaware Tecra lay unconscious at the staircase.
