Outdoor advertising best way to attract customers this festive season

The year 2022 is on its final stretch. In less than 30 days, Kenyans will enter the month of December that brings with it the joy of the Christmas Season.

This year’s Festive Season will undoubtedly be a relief for Kenyans following what has been an eventful year. In fact, this season, more Kenyans will be looking to shed off the stressors that have dominated the past 11 months and put on a good cheer.

“Christmas is a good season for coming together and celebrating on a community and family level. These celebrations come with the year’s top compliments such as gifts and discounts,” says advertising consultant Maxwell Oketch.

Interestingly, says Oketch, this implies that Christmas presents an opportunity for businesses to get consumers into stores and capture their attention on the move. With sales during the holiday season surging, businesses can’t afford to ignore this ideal time for advertising.

Many people remember classic TV commercials during the holidays. With the growth of social media over the last two decades, that might seem like the best avenue for your new holiday marketing campaign. However, outdoor advertising has been, time and again, the best medium for holiday advertisements.

Take David Amoke for instance. By December 15, 2021, he had not bought any gift for his two daughters or wife. The holidays were less than a week away. He was feeling the pressure—he wanted to make his wife and kids happy.

Then he noticed street ads on bus shelters and billboards on his commute from the Ambassadeur Bus Stage in the Nairobi Central Business District. These adverts turned out to be perfect placements for the hottest gift ideas.

“I saw ads on outdoor activities and holiday destinations with discounts for families, handbags and jewelry for women and at that moment I knew what I needed to buy. It really took the weight off my shoulders,” he says. “This year, I now know where to look for the best deals in the market for my Christmas shopping.”

According to Oketch, Amoke’s instant decision after spotting the outdoor adverts was not so far-fetched. “The moment the sellers placed their adverts outdoors, their chances of netting customers like Amoke shot up by two thirds.

The majority of consumers make their purchase decisions while driving or riding the bus or when walking in the streets; not when at home,” he says. He adds that the combination of Christmas and outdoor advertising is especially effective for businesses.

According to statistics that were collected by advertising firm Nielsen and OAAA, 3 out of 4 people make impulse purchases around the holidays. In addition, people out of home have a 33 per cent heightened alertness compared with people in home, while 68 per cent of buyers frequently make purchasing decisions while driving.

However, it is not just any type of outdoor advertising that will get you the customers you want. You must be specific and narrow down to the right advertising firm. How do you do this?

According to Oketch, one of the most effective methods is to contrast what various outdoor advertising firms offer and picking the best.

“A good outdoor advertising will remain virtually immune to consumer avoidance. It can’t be turned off, flipped to the next page, or thrown away. It will communicate and get the desired results out of sheer presence and authority,” says Oketch.

When we asked Maxwell to recommend an affordable and effective advertising firm, he named Adnest Africa among the top advertising firms in Kenya today.
