A student who scored 273 marks in his KCPE examinations has recorded an incredible score of A- in the 2023 KCSE exams.
The student, Paul Kihumba was a student at the little-known Mioro Secondary School in Mathioya, Murang’a County.
He was one of the two top performers at the school, the other student being his classmate Kihenjo Mwangi who scored an equally impressive grade of B-.
Kihumba said that he first sat for his KCSE examination in 2022. In that exam, he scored a mean grade of B-. However, he felt that he could do better and resolved to repeat Form Four. His conviction has now paid off.

“I have worked really hard to score an A- of 78 points and I am happy because of what I have achieved. My ambition is to undertake a Information Technology course at the University of Nairobi,” said Kihumba.
In the 2023 examinations, a total of 1,216 students scored a mean grade of A. Out of these, 889 students were from national schools.
A total of 2,782 girls scored A- while 4,472 boys scored A-. A total of 18,078 attained a mean grade of B+ with 10,370 males and 7,708 females.
In the B plain category, there were 36,728 candidates, while a total of 59,514 scored B- and 78,343 scored C+.
201,133 candidates managed to get the minimum C+ grade that is required for university entrance.
“This is 22.27 per cent of students attained direct entry into the university,” said Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu when he released the results on January 8, 2024.
