Mumias East Member of Parliament, Peter Salasya disclosed his humble neighbourhood where he came from before becoming a lawmaker.

While most politicians start their political careers with a tidy pocket sum and a good residence, Peter Salasya’s modest home goes to show that money isn’t a determinant in the success of starting a political career; benevolence, knowledge and grit account for much.

In a viral video, Peter Salasya laughed with his next-door neighbour, reminiscing the good old days when he lived in the said plot.

In the video, Salasya humorously revealed how never walked with his house keys. Instead, he hid it behind the toilet or hung it on the house window.

All smiles, Salasya went on to ask his former neighbours whether they ever thought he would become Mumias East MP.

“Ulikuwa unajua nitakuwa mbunge? Ulisikia wapi ati nimewin kiti? (Did you ever imagine I will be an MP? Where did you hear that I have won the election?),” Salasya quipped to one of his former neighbours.

Salasya took to social media, saying that most of his neighbours did not believe that he would go back to see them.

“Today nimetembelea majirani wangu nilikuwa nikikaa nao kwa ploti kakamega kabla niwe mbunge. (Today I visited my neighbours whom I used to stay with before I became a parliamentarian),”he said.

Co-Op post

Salasya also revealed that he lived in the modest rental for a span of 4 years, from 2017 to August 2022.

One social media user jokingly said, “Huyu hajawai amini aliwin kiti

After visiting his former home, the bundle of joy made his way to the town where he met his friend who was a shopkeeper.

Salasya remembered how he was so broke that he would ask the shopkeeper to loan him a bar of soap costing Sh. 20 and sugar worth Sh. 50.

“Ile deni nililipa? Sabuni ile nilikopa?” he jokingly questioned the shopkeeper.

On his social media, MP Peter Salasya wrote an inspiring message to Kenyans.

“Ata kama leo unakopa kwa duka sabuni ya 20 bob an sukari ya 50 bob the way I used to do, it doesn’t define your ending,” he wrote.

“We all have a bright future because God has good plans for all of us as long as we remain optimistic and hopeful.”
