Matiang’i bans cops from falling in love, dating, marrying other cops

Police Marriages in Kenya: Interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i has caused an uproar after announcing that he bis going to ban police officers in Kenya from falling in love with each other, dating and getting married to each other.

According to the minister, police officers who break this rule will have to leave service. “Moving forward, it will be illegal for a police officer to date or get married to a fellow officer,” he said.

This directive is set to start in July this year. “We have agreed that we will draw the line at this point. Senior police officers who opt to have affairs and relationships with the junior police officers and they want to marry them, one of them has to leave the service. We cannot continue this way,” he said.

The minister spoke during the official opening ceremony of direct entry cadet inspectors course at the National Police College Kiganjo Campus in Nyeri.

Matiang’i has now asked the police to formulate rules on the ban. Matiang’i made the rule in what he termed as an effort to stop law enforcers from domestic violence.

The declaration attracted condemnation with Kenyans questioning the rationale under which the minister instituted the ban. “I love Kenya! Now the National Police Service Commission want to determine and control how people fall in Love! My heart bleeds for lovers in the police service!” Senator Ledama Ole Kina said.
