SRC decreases pay for incoming MPs and MCAs. See their new salaries

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission announced that they will decrease the pay for the incoming MPs and MCAs in the country, who will take up office after the August 9th general elections.

The announcement was made by SRC Chairperson, Lynn Mengich, who made it very clear that the commission has dealt away with car grants and allowances for MPs and MCAs. Sitting and mileage allowances have also been abolished.

This does not only affect the sub-county and ward representatives, but it also hits all County speakers and County Executive Committee Members (CECs)

“Sitting allowance for plenary sessions in Parliament and County Assemblies and ceases to be payable,” said the SRC boss.

Acknowledging that she and her commission are bound to face strong opposition from MPs and MCAs, Mengich said that she is very much prepared to file a lawsuit for any resistance she gets. She would not want a recount of 2019.

Should the incoming politicians file lawsuits, SRC indicated it would defend its decision in court on the basis that it announced the new directive before the MPs and MCAs could get to the office on new contracts.

The new salaries for incoming politicians countrywide are as follows:

  1. President – Sh. 1.4 Million monthly inclusive of house and commuter allowance
  2. Deputy President – Sh. 1.2 Million monthly (inclusive of all allowances)
  3. Cabinet Secretaries & Attorney General – Sh. 924,000 (inclusive of all allowances)

  1. That’s right. There’s no need to be given an allowance for doing the job you are mandated to do, for sitting in a session where your job mandates you to be, or for holding the title you’ve been given by ‘wananchi’. I trust the salvaged amount is used to create more jobs for the youth.
