City Hall worker Kanani’s Nairobi club 1824 shuts down

The closure comes barely two months after another popular club 1824, located along Lang’ata Road, announced its closure.

1824 shuts down four months after the freezing of assets owned by its proprietor, Wilson Nahashon Kanani, a junior staff member of the Nairobi County government.

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission accused Kanani of illicit wealth accumulation after discovering his assets worth Sh643 million on a monthly salary of only Sh55,000.

1824 was also previously raided by police in 2022 following a directive to close all bars in residential areas.

The Nairobi County government recently canceled all licenses for nightclubs operating in residential areas over noise pollution concerns.

According to the Pubs, Entertainment, and Restaurant Association of Kenya (PERAK), there are at least 12,000 nightclubs contributing to about Sh21.6 billion in revenue to the Kenya Revenue Authority and various licensing bodies.

The association says that these establishments have employed 13,000 permanent staff who would lose their jobs if the ban on nightclubs in residential areas was enforced. Further, the government will lose close to Sh22 billion annually if the crackdown continues.
