Tr Cillah: Kenyans say passionate teacher using TikTok to teach is Kenya's best

Priscilla Wanjiku Karanja, famously known as Teacher Cillah on TikTok has gained global recognition for her methodical way of teaching through the social media platform.

Having joined TikTok in 2019, Teacher Cillah’s way of teaching through educational videos on her channel is presented in a fun and engaging manner.

The teacher’s method is straightforward but well thought out. She records herself having conversations with pupils/teaching lessons on the board to create her content.

She adds a bit of flair to her teaching style by composing catchy educational songs and dancing to them alongside her pupils.

“I believe that learning should be a joyful experience, something that children look forward to,” she said.

With this content, Tr Cillah has grown her TikTok account to over 154,500 followers and her videos have generated over 2.4 million likes.

The pupils admire her special way of teaching, which is different from how most teachers conduct lessons. In one of her videos, a pupil gave Teacher Cillah a bouquet of flowers to show their appreciation.

According to her, she chose Tiktok because some of her students were introverted and hardly participated in class activities. So, she came up with a creative way to capture their interest and involvement.

Through TikTok, Tr Cillah was able to connect with them in a more simple language that they understood; creativity and fun.

“My content is driven by my passion for teaching as well as my commitment to seeing my students excel. I believe that a happy student is a successful one,” she noted.

Tr Cillah realized that her dance routines were vital in helping the pupils with memory retention and concept comprehension.

“I never thought I could enjoy learning so much. Her dances make me feel like I’m part of something bigger like I’m dancing and learning with friends,” said one of the school’s 7th-grade pupils, Mary.

The teacher recalls finding her passion for teaching at a young age. She used to help her younger siblings with their studies, which brought satisfaction to her.

It did not take her long to realize that she would pursue a career in teaching. That is how she ended up with a degree in education.

With the spread of technology globally, Teacher Cillah found that she could leverage her teaching skills to revolutionise her learning lessons.
